There are lots of beautiful descriptions and historical details in this novel. Both Gavin and Madeline are great characters, as well as are the secondary characters; even the "villain" is credible. The book opens well from the very first scene, which is the prologue. Up through about 40%, the excitement is maintain without the need for the H and h to drip lust for each other every time the two of them have a scene together. Their relationship develops at a steady pace, and had the plot avoided its constant repetition, this book could have easily earned five stars as a historical romance. The author's writing style has good flow and is easy to follow and enjoy. In addition, Gavin and Madeline have the kind of sensual attraction for each other portrayed on the cover.
This story bogged down in the middle with repetitious scenes and actions and with the H and h thinking the same thoughts, several times too many. A scenario would happen, and the characters would react and think exactly as they had before, so that the story felt like a series of replays.
There wasn't enough of Gavin's point of view or his angst for me. I learned the reasons for his behavior through the conversations of others, but it was some 60% into the story before I really read about his emotions from his own thoughts.
I can't say the book was not interesting. I wanted to finish it in order to see how Gavin and Madeline got along when they were, at last, no longer resisting each other. The sex scene is detailed, yet there are no words used that should offend, and the book is experienced mostly from Madeline's point of view. When the story came out of that lag, there was an interesting twist that moved it forward to the end.

Sanctuary of Roses Colleen Gleason 9780615479453 Books Reviews
So here we've got a mother (Lady Anne) running from her psychobutt husband (Fantin de Belgrume) with her 10 yr. old daughter (Madelyne) in tow, to an Abbey. Ten years pass, then enters Lord Gavin Mel Verne. This story is about Madelyne & Lord Gavin. I found it ironic that Lord Gavin removes Lady Madelyne from the safety, protection and security of her cloistered life at the Abbey, in order to provide her with safety, protection and security!! But he's honored bound through vengeance to do so.
I had to wonder how much better it would've been (for women of this era) to choose a cloistered life - - away from the harshness of the "outside world". Yeah, that would have it's advantages.
This story is about Lord Gavin Mal Verne..who's described as not a handsome man but rather a man filled with hardness, pain and determination..and Lady Madelyne de Belgrume...who is of course, beautiful (and aspiring to be a nun).
I loved the Court intrigue, "whisperings" and romantic Court innuendo. The correlation and parallels between Lady Madelynes' maid (Tricky) & Lady Madelynes' love interests as well as the romantic gossip that is passed back and forth was fabulous. In the meantime, while all this Court intrigue occurs, Madelynes psychobutt Dad has found out she's alive & continues to make her life miserable...the guy is madder than a Hatter!!
This story was succinct and sweet...at times the dialogue sappy...ie; "Desire sprang to life sending heat through the core of his abdomen and.....lower!" Cripes...can it be any cheesier??!!?? I mean..."lower"??? Just SAY IT Ms. Gleason! All in all...a good story and worth the time & effort.
This medieval romance has a very good heroine and hero. Sometimes the action stalled a little but overall this story is enjoyable.
All Madelyne knows is the cloistered life. She has some memories of her father before she and her mother escaped her father’s keep. She has kept her identity a secret.
Lord Gavin Mal Verne stumbles upon the convent and he is injured. Madelyne cares for his wounds but tries to quickly send him away. She is attracted to Gavin but knows any outsiders can be dangerous. It is imperative her father not find her and her mother, he thinks they are dead.
Gavin though has been given permission to hunt down Madelyn’s father and when he discovers her identity she becomes a pawn in a scheme between two very powerful men. Gavin wants to protect Madelyn but recognizes how important she is to subduing her father.
Madelyn wants to steer clear of her crazy sire but that begins to look impossible. She is upset at leaving the convent and the sly ways at court are almost too much for her. Fortunately she has a devoted friend and Gavin also is there to try to protect her.
This story moves along at a steady pace until both parties are at court which slowed down some of the action. It picks up again though with some unexpected twists. The leads have to trust each other which is not easy for either of them. Their feelings were engaged throughout this story and Madelyn, emotions are especially well written. The reader understands her uncertainty in new surroundings and her awakening emotions with Gavin.
I loved this lush, passionate, sweet story. There aren't many medieval romances
done well anymore, and with more than just a window-dressing setting, but
Colleen Gleason, with her flair for historical detail and setting, really puts
the reader in the time period.
The characters are realistic for their time, and the love story between Maddie
and Gavin is sensitive and emotional.
She wants to be left alone to live in an abbey, away from her dangerous and
abusive father, and until Gavin finds her, that's what her life is like. But
when Gavin finds her and brings her to the king, Madelyn is ordered to marry.
The relationship between Madelyn and Gavin grows realistically, and he is a
wonderful hero--just the kind I like, and when he falls for her, the scene in
the woods when they first kiss--it's amazing.
Highly recommended! This book seems to be related to two others, and I'm going
to read them too.
