I admire the authors ability to turn what at first appears to be a hallmark channel movie but builds the tension in such a way to give the reader a sense of foreboding and unease.The story follows Jonah, an ex-reverend who is devastated after a car accident that kills the husband of a family within his congregation. Jonah demands that God make it right by saving the husband, and when the prayer goes unanswered he loses faith.
This story, at least for me, explored our insatiable desire for meaning in events that are out of our control. For Jonah, and the reader we are shown that the meanings we attach to things aren't as black and white as we would like them to be.
My only fault with the story is that I felt Jonah reached his conclusion a bit too easily. After the climactic disaster at the end, I would have like to have seen more of an internal struggle that brought him to the revelation that he found at the end of the story.
Over all, Adam Rainville is a talented author with a beautiful easy to read prose and description, masterful sense of tone and controlled pacing. I'll definitely be checking out more of his work.

This is the first short story I have read by this author. Putting God into horror fiction is always a little tacky, so I was curious. After a car accident, the main character loses his faith and is shaken deeply. He has destroyed a family. He wants to be a Reverend no longer. He turns to drink. The way the story plays out is thoroughly original and creative. But somewhat unusual. Well worth the read. Thought-provoking.
